For the five failed IUIs we previously tried, I bought leftover vials of Follistim, the most expensive medicine required, from other women who have either gotten pregnant or given up. But we’re moving on to IVF, and I need more meds than the pool of wanna-be-moms I know can supply. So we switch to the only insurance plan we can find that covers any infertility related prescriptions.

Seeing the $5,000 worth of medication required for just one IVF cycle piled high on my kitchen table overwhelms me, and I think for the first time, “This can’t be good for my body,” but I don't consider stopping.
